South Yorkshire Flood Victim Support Appeal

Big John at Breakfast and the leaders of the four South Yorkshire Authorities - Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield, have now launched the South Yorkshire Flood Victim Support Appeal with Hallam FM.

Together with the South Yorkshire Community Foundation, the appeal aims to raise money to directly support thousands of people displaced by the severe flooding that hit South Yorkshire this week. We want as many people as possible to support our campaign so we can help the thousands of people whose lives have been devastated by this flood, many of whom have no way of replacing their essential belongings. If you, or the company you work for, would like to donate to the fund, and maybe even speak on-air to our presenters, please call the phone number below.

Big John, the host of Hallam FM's breakfast show, commented: "Since Monday we've not only been providing vital information to help our listeners cope with road closures, school closures and evacuations, but have also been blown away by heart-felt messages from the public and local businesses. So many people have already pledged to help out in any way they can - and we're now proud to present the best opportunity."
In a joint statement, Barnsley's Cllr Steve Houghton, Mayor of Doncaster Martin Winter, Rotherham's Cllr Roger Stone and Cllr Jan Wilson of Sheffield added: "Thousands of our residents across South Yorkshire have suffered the upset, and in some cases, the tragedy of severe flooding. We hope that people from South Yorkshire and beyond realise the financial and emotional pain that many victims are enduring and find a way to help."

To get the ball rolling now and pledge your money, please call 0114 209 0209. Calling this number will be the first step to making a secure credit / debit card or online banking payment. You'll even be given the option to explain how you're feeling about the effects of the floods on Hallam FM. Donations can also be made at any branch of Yorkshire Bank and cheques in the post to any of the four South Yorkshire Council offices. Cheques should be made payable to: "SYCF Flood Disaster Relief Fund". The official charity name is the South Yorkshire Community Foundation and the registered charity number is 517714.

The Land of Smiles

A joint venture coming to the aid of Thailand's tsunami victims - www.landofsmiles.co.uk

Two great guys, Brad from Red, the local boy girl duo and Harry, from Ricky Graham Leisure, would like you to visit the charity website they are currently promoting to raise money for a children's orphanage in Thailand. The children at the orphanage were all victims of the horrific December 04 tsunami. Brad and Harry are currently trying to help them financially. Far more details are given on the website, but one important aspect of their fundraising is likely to involve a number of concerts throughout our area. These concerts will be widely advertised and hopefully very well patronised events. If you are unable to attend a concert but would still like to contribute a little towards this worthwhile effort it is possible to make a donation on the website.

     tsunami3        tsunami5

Some of the children at the orphanage lost all of their family to the tsunami, some of them cry when it rains because they think the tsunami is coming back, many of them are now afraid to go to the beach. They will all bear the scars of the tsunami but with the help of the "Duang Prateep Foudation" they will recieve education and care and will go on to play an important part in the community.

The final message from Brad, "We will be organising a run of charity concerts in and around South Yorkshire and these events will be publicised on our website. Any publicity, links or contributions you can help with will be most appreciated".

Your website editor would, once again, like to acknowledge the tremendous efforts made so frequently by the local artistes, club committees, charity organisers and supporting club members. This, the latest in a long standing tradition of "clubland" helping those in need should be applauded as being a credit to the club movement and one which our local community, I am sure, are proud to be associated with.
